How do organizations move off VMware to AWS?

By Tim Collinson, Chief Technology Officer, 11:59 · Updated October 26, 2026

Short answer: Assess every workload, decide where each one should land, build a secure AWS foundation, and migrate in planned waves, with the highest-cost and easiest workloads first.

Many organizations are re-examining VMware after Broadcom's licensing and pricing changes, and AWS offers several landing options, from running VMware-compatible workloads largely as-is to rebuilding them as managed services.

11:59 delivers this as Rapid Migration on top of Cloud Foundations, and can run the result afterward.

The four decisions in a VMware exit

  1. What you have. An inventory of every VM, its dependencies, its usage and what it costs to keep.
  2. Where each workload should land. Moved largely as-is, moved to managed services such as Amazon RDS, rebuilt, or retired.
  3. The foundation first. Accounts, networking, identity, security controls and logging set up before the first workload moves.
  4. The order of moves. Waves grouped by dependency, starting where the savings are highest and the risk is lowest.

Common questions

Do we have to rebuild every application?

No. Many workloads move largely as-is, some move to managed services, and some are retired. The assessment decides which is which.

Can California departments contract for this?

Yes, through CMAS 3-24-01-1044 or the TDDC MSA #5-22-70-25-189.

How long does a migration take?

It depends on the size and complexity of the estate. The assessment produces a scoped, quoted plan.

Who runs the environment afterward?
